Biography
Dr. Fein is a Ph.D. Clinical Psychologist / Neuroscientist who has focused his research efforts over the past 35 years on the clinical and cognitive neuroscience of addiction and other psychiatric and neurologic disorders, and on developing technology to support such work. He was Professor of Medical Psychology and Radiology at UCSF until 1999, at which time he formed Neurobehavioral Research, Inc. (NRI). Since moving NRI to Hawaii in 2005, he became Professor of Medicine and Psychology at the University of Hawaii. He is committed to understanding the brain networks and mechanisms underlying and affected by addiction and mental illness, and how they can be impacted and ameliorated via varying treatment modalities. He has been PI on major clinical studies of substance abusing and psychiatrically disturbed samples, including studies examining brain structure and function in early to very long-term abstinence from alcohol and drugs in adolescent, young adult, middle aged, and elderly samples. His presentation at this conference builds on cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of brain functional changes during abstinence – those studies suggest potential treatments to support attaining and maintaining abstinence, and also suggest that treatment should be tailored to the clinical history and clinical presentation of the patient.
Research Area
His research (and NRI) is focused on studying the effects of aging, disease, and drugs on brain structure and function, and in developing technology to advance such investigations.
